Praising The Effort! Why Didn’t I Think of That?

Good Effort    I am constantly reminded, thankfully, that motherhood is an evolution.  It’s a constant learning process.  Just when I think I have it mastered, a.k.a., ‘I know my child’, I am in a situation that surprises me, or he surprises me…  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I sometimes foolishly, on a particularly fantastic day, think that I have it all goin’ on.

And then I don’t.  I have read so many parenting books, blogs, internet articles and parenting magazines that I sometimes, again foolishly, think there can’t be a parenting technique or philosophy, I don’t know about.

And then, Kindergarten began…

computer.jpg     Happy Monday, Internet Gurus!

I’ve already added StumbleUpon to my site (as you can see below) and I’m in the process of adding ‘Share On Facebook’ and ‘add to del.icio.us’…

Any advice out there?  I was going to add Digg, but after some research, I think it may be for more newsy sites.

Do you like another service- like Kirtsy, for example?

Please let me know!

You can leave a comment here or in the ‘Contact Me’ section.

Thanks for your time!

Have You Ever Forgotten Your Mother-In-Law’s Birthday… While Standing In Her Kitchen?

Mother-In-Law\'s Birthday      Or rather, have you remembered it is your Mother-In-Law’s Birthday while standing in her kitchen?  I have… just the other day.

My Mother-In-Law’s birthday falls on Mother’s Day or just around Mother’s Day every year.  This year we went to the beach for Mother’s Day weekend, so we weren’t around.  And everyone was fine with that…

I even got my Mother-In-Law a birthday/mother’s day present, which I’m not supposed to do- because my husband takes her out to a very nice restaurant every year for her birthday/Mother’s Day. It’s a nice tradition and they both enjoy it!  He is taking her to dinner this week.

So, I tell her I got her a present and that My son and I are bringing it over… I took a GREAT picture of my son and his twin cousins who are all about the same age- you know: an unbelievable picture where everybody has a cute smile on their face, they are all kinda-hugging each other, everyone is looking at the camera and not picking their nose… one of those, great, pictures.  So I blew it up into a 5×7 and framed it-

Nice, huh?

So, we go over to their house, and are having a nice afternoon.  My little guy, me and my mother-in-law- we’re sitting around talking.  And then she asks my son if he wants a piece of cake…

“Sure!  Great!”

And I’m thinking, ‘Why does she have a fancy little cake out on the counter… what’s the occasion… Is it left over from Mother’s Day?’

And then I look at the calendar- and it’s her birthday!

“Happy Birthday!”  I said very loud, I think because I was so surprised by my lack of tact and awareness/trying to cover up the fact that we had been over there for half an hour and not actually wished her a happy birthday…

So, I went over to my mother-in-law’s house, WITH A PRESENT in hand, forgetting it was her birthday…

Can anyone top that?  No, I didn’t think so…

Thank God my Mother-In-Law has a sense of humor ~

Good Mom / Bad Mom

Good Mom/ Bad Mom     I have my good days… and I have my bad days.

Don’t you love those days that are terrific?  When everything falls into place at just the right time: everyone is happy, the house is clean, the wash is done and folded, dinner is planned and you’re doing an educational art project with your son?  I have days like that… sometimes.  And on days like that I say to myself,

‘I have got this mom-thing down!’

Most days are pretty much like that, without the laundry getting done, and my son and I doing something together, although it is not always an educational art project…

And then there are days that are not-so-good.

On these days I forget to do something, my son is cranky, or we are out-of-sync or all of the above.

I give myself a break on the forgetting part because we all know that you just become more forgetful once you give birth, it must be one of those left-brain/right-brain things… I don’t know, I forget.

But anyway- on the incredibly harried days I think to myself,

‘How can I possibly be so inept at something I’ve been doing 24/7 for 5 years?!…’

Does this happen to anyone else?!!

My thoughts usually get better in a little while, when a tantrum is over, or I realize that you can’t always have a logical discussion with a 5-year-old…

And then I realize that I am unconsciously basing my net worth on if my child is happy, and fed, and not tired and cranky…

And this is not totally out-of-line, because I can control/fix/remedy most of these scenarios…  And it’s my job.

But I shouldn’t get frustrated with myself, if my son isn’t thrilled about eating lima beans.

My mood is so affected by my little guy’s.

If he’s having a good day, I’m having a good day.  When he gets excited about something, I do too.

If he’s sick, I might as well be…

I wonder if this ever changes?  The way my mother looks at me sometimes, I don’t think it does…

I am constantly reminded of the overwhelmingly ENORMOUS amount of love,

that my heart can generate for such a little human being…

Love is powerful, however.  It’s been written about for centuries…

So it’s no surprise that then he smiles, and it’s a good day again.

An abbreviated version of this can be read at DC Metro Moms.

‘Mommy, Let’s Just Listen…’

My son and I sing a lot.  We are not always on key.  But we have a good time.  He loves my singing… or so I thought.

The other day we were listening to kids’ music in the car, I don’t remember the exact song, but it was by Laurie Berkner, Justin Roberts, or They Might Be GIants… oh, or Dan Zanes.  He stopped singing but I continued in my earnest, yet sometimes flat singing voice, and then I heard,

“Mommy, Let’s Just Listen.”

Ummmm.  Okay.

Guess the days of him thinking ‘any song that came out of my mouth was melodious’- are over.
