This May be a Little Random But- Here’s How to Open a Pomegranate

Pomegranate    How does one go about cutting a pomegranate?

Yes, this is a little random, but stay with me for just a second… last week I bought a pomegranate to show my son.  He had seen one on TV and he’d never eaten one, so we got one at the store.

But, I got it home and cut into it, and immediately had bright red pomegranate juice going all over my kitchen counter…

Needless to go into any more detail- I ruined the pomegranate and thought, “Why don’t I know how to cut open a pomegranate?”

Fast forward to last night- Andrea from Andrea’s Recipes twitters about pomegranates-

which is a little weird, in a good way, because I hadn’t bought a pomegranate in about a DECADE, before last week,

I twitter her back asking her how to cut one open (because she knows everything about food and cooking)

She twitters me this site that has everything you need to know about pomegranates!

So, How do you cut open a pomegranate?  Here you go-

How to Open a Pomegranate

Pomegranates may seem intimidating, but they are easy to open. This efficient procedure for opening a pomegranate has six simple steps:

  • Cut – With a sharp paring knife, cut off the top about a half inch below the crown.
  • Score – Once the top has been removed, four to six sections of the pomegranate divided by white membrane will be visible. With the knife’s point, score the skin along each section.
  • Open – Using both hands, carefully pull the pomegranate apart, breaking it into smaller sections.
  • Loosen – Over a bowl of water, loosen the arils and allow them to drop freely into the bowl. The arils will sink to the bottom of the bowl and the membrane will float to the top.
  • Scoop – Use a spoon to scoop out the pieces of white membrane that have floated to the top of the water.
  • Strain – Pour the arils and remaining liquid through a strainer.

Enjoy your pomegranates… they actually make festive decorations in your kitchen this time of year!

My Ode to December Birthdays

dec bdays      An ode is a ‘lyric poem’ in an ‘elevated style’…

Okay, so this isn’t an ode.  Maybe it’s a tribute… acknowledgment, applause, appreciation, citation, commendation, compliment, encomium (what is that? I’ve never even heard of that word before?!), honor, laudation, panegyric (I’ve never heard of that word either, wow, all of a sudden I feel very ignorant, vapid even…), recognition, recommendation, respect, accolade- (wow, I like that one)!

Yes, this is an accolade, basically, a salute to ‘December Babies and their Moms’

If you were born in December or have given birth in December- you are part of a very special club.  I gave birth to my son a week before Christmas, so I’m a full-fledged member of this club.

*If you’re just reading this out of curiosity, club members get extra-cool-mom points for giving birth to babies during Hanukkah if they’re Jewish, and on Christmas or the week before, if they’re Christian.

*Why the bonus points?  Because they learn to juggle everything and are bastions of organization !!!!!

So without further ado-

over at DC Metro Moms, because they rock :)

New Moon Movie Review

New Moon     Yep, I saw New Moon yesterday! I waited a week or so- so my friend and I were not mobbed by tween girls.

I was a little wary of what the final cut would be like because I have read some not-so-spectacular reviews…

AND…

It’s Great !!!!!!!

If you have not seen Twilight, do not go and see this movie, watch Twilight, then, see this movie.

OR BETTER YET- READ THE BOOKS,

then, watch the movie;

with that said:

What a really liked about this movie is how the director moves it along…

The middle of this book is depressing, as Bella longs for Edward, but the movie keeps moving along and Bella doesn’t seem all-that-depressed as she develops her ‘friendship’ with Jacob… the Werewolf.

This movie is FUN!  Good Vampires, Good Werewolves, young love, seemingly impossible scenarios- all believable… if you’ve read the books.

The beginning is great, the middle is very well done, and the ending in Italy with the Volturi does not disappoint!

Go see it now, the ‘massive’ crowds are gone; make a ‘date’ with a mom friend, get some popcorn,

and enjoy !

Visit ‘Be With Me’ Children’s Playseum… in Bethesda

Bees     The ‘Be With Me Playseum’ is now open in Bethesda!

I visited the playseum on Friday before it’s Grand Opening… and it’s GREAT!

It has all different ‘areas’… a grocery store, a radio station, the solar system, a stage,

a grandmother’s attic and more.

Each area has activities and books, and you can play with your kids

or sit and get a cup of coffee and watch them have fun!

What a great idea?!

Admission is $5 a person-

They have adventure areas ranging for 9 months- 14 years old.

Song and Story times daily-

The playseum is open Monday thru Saturday-

9:30am – 6pm.

It’s on Wisconsin Avenue, in the heart of Bethesda,

right next to the Orvis Store, on the lower level!

301- 807- 8028

It’s truly a nice ‘destination’ with your kiddies

Enjoy!
