Why I love 5 Year Olds…

I’ll say it again- the weather is great here in DC right now…

On Sunday, my guys went to the park while I went to the grocery store… yeah, I’m not quite sure how that was worked out- lucky me.

So I shop, buy the week’s worth of groceries (while forgetting my reusable bags, like I always do).  I come home and am putting groceries away when my phone rings, it’s my Little Guy,

“Hi Mom!  How are ya?”

“Great.”

Where are ya?”

“I’m at home, putting away the groceries.”

“Well stop!  Dad and I are on our way home.  We’ll help you!”

Just another reason I love 5 Year Olds

“Oh, the Weather Outside is… Awesome!”

Isn’t it amazing how good weather puts EVERYBODY in a good mood?!  Our thermometer read 66 degrees yesterday, we went to the park, we washed cars!  It’s going to stay this nice all this week.

The weather affects everyone (obviously), yet ‘talking about the weather’ has a negative implication, like you had nothing to say to the person, so you just ‘talked about the weather’.  But weather is important…

It is generally true that people who live in warm, sunny climates are happier.

After all, weather is like pizza– when it’s good, it’s GREAT :)

Yes, I just compared weather to pizza… but can’t you really compare everything to pizza?

The DC Auto Show was great!

And taking Metro couldn’t have been easier.

If you have boys, consider taking them next year… we saw Diego, Spiderman and Ironman too!

The DC Auto Show This Weekend!

The DC Auto Show is this weekend!  As a mother to a young son- this is comparable to DisneyWorld, right here in our own backyard.

Take Metro down to the convention center, and have fun!  Kids under 6 get in FREE, and adults pay $12.

There is stuff for kids- with Dora, Diego and even Spiderman making appearances throughout the day!

So get up and get down there!  We’ll be there, looking at the 700 cars and trucks…

I don’t know if my Little Guy is going to be able to stand it- he’s giddy about it already!

Why is it a Coffee Table?

Ah, the coffee table. We all have them.

But why are they called coffee tables?

Why aren’t they called tea tables?  Or rather, why didn’t they start out being known as tea tables?  Tea was a lot more popular than coffee way back when.  I went to Wikipedia and didn’t find a whole lot…

Basically, coffee tables were designed as low tables and this idea may have been introduced from the Ottoman Empire, based on the tables in use in tea gardens.  See- tea gardens- so why weren’t they known as Tea Tables??

Coffee wasn’t even introduced into Europe until the mid-1600s…

And it didn’t become popular here in the States until after the War of 1812,

and that was due to the British temporarily cutting off access to tea imports.

So I understand why it is now known as a coffee table- people gather round and sit their coffee on it,

But why was it never known or referred to as a tea table?

It boggles the mind 😉

School Starts at 8am ?!

Yesterday, filled with excitement and joy, I went to the open house at the school my son will be attending next year.  It’s a wonderful school and a great community and I am really looking forward to being a part of it for the next 9 years, from Kindergarten through 8th grade.

The principal talked to us ‘new parents’ about curriculum and special projects and hot lunch, the usual… And then she went through a typical day for kindergartners-

“Children can start arriving at 7:45am… and we officially start our day at 8am.”

I had seen the 8am on the sheet that was handed out, and hoped it had been a misprint…
