BUTTERFLIES: THE COOL IN EVERYDAY LIFE
I’m continuing a series I call ‘The Cool In Everyday Life’. From time to time I’m highlighting stuff I’ve encountered that is just VERY COOL. Last time it was that cool video, before that it was a very cool pizza cutter (this isn’t rocket science, okay?).
Today, it is butterflies! I took these pictures myself.
Now before you gasp and think we have beautiful wildflowers all over our backyard and butterflies are frolicking to and fro, let me self- disclose: I took these pictures at the butterfly house at Hershey Park when we went this summer.
But I did take these pictures with my own camera and they do show that every once-in-a-while, when you need a smile… all you need is a butterfly!
DOVES… AND FASHION
There are 2 doves which have started to come to rest on our deck every morning. It’s so sweet. Sometimes it looks like they are on a date.
I was watching them this morning and 1 of them turned her head 180 degrees (or just about).
And I thought to myself: What if we could turn our heads like that. We could carry on complete conversations with people in back of us…
WHAT WOULD THIS DO TO FASHION? The FASHION INDUSTRY as we know it would be COMPLETELY different. Designers would have to put more effort into the backs of shirts,etc. because it would be like another front. You would have designs on the backs of t-shirts as well. And jackets… blazers, what would happen to them?!
I know, it boggles the mind… maybe I need some more coffee. it sounds like I am still in REM sleep.

I LOOK LIKE WHO?
Ummmm, okay. I went to the My Heritage website to see which celebrities I most resemble. As you can see- the results are in from scanning my face and the celebrity I MOST resemble is… RON LIVINGSTON ?! Our faces are 71% similiar…
Don’t get me wrong- I think Ron Livingston is a good-looking guy and a very good actor,
BUT HE IS A GUY. I always thought I was more feminine looking than Ron…
And how do I resemble Rosanne Barr AND Rachel Hunter?

A SHOUT-OUT TO GIANT FOOD
I have to do a Shout-Out to Giant Food. Their stores look great, employees are SO helpful and they’ve undergone BIG changes…
I went to a great lunch downtown sponsored by Giant some weeks ago, in anticipation of their new logo and all the new stuff they are adding to make mealtime simpler for moms.
I left the next week for the beach. After arriving at our rental house and dropping our stuff down, my mom and I headed to the relatively new Giant down at Bethany Beach. It was enormous and beautiful, and (GASP) had THE DELI KIOSK!!! As I wrote in my previous post about Giant, the idea of deli kiosk is cool, but it’s amazing in ‘real life’.
You swipe your Giant card, enter what you want from the deli, and they announce your order is ready over a loudspeaker system in the store. Could anything be more cool?
Okay, I’m calming down.
Then I returned home from the beach to a big stack of mail. In it I got coupons from Giant, including one for a free reusable bag! Everybody knows that everybody likes free stuff and Giant knows that MOMS like to know about good stuff we can use…
SO, I then headed over to a newly-renovated Giant down Old Georgetown Road a bit. I pulled in a parking space and was helping my little guy out of our car when a Bentley pulled into the space facing us… A little old lady was helped out and walked eagerly toward the new Giant on opening day of the renovation. I thought to myself,
“Giant is doing something right, if a woman is being driven in her Bentley to check out their new store.”
The new store is awesome- with a deli kiosk- and really, some great new prepared foods.
Thanks to Giant for making their stores more family friendly and adding products that may help moms tackle nightly mealtime! Go to their website to learn more and don’t forget about their SIMPLY ENJOY brand- I love it.
Now all I have to do is encourage my Giant on Arlington Road in Bethesda to get a deli kiosk too!
MY SON HAS ‘THE SMELLY PILLOW’ ?!
First of all, I pride myself on being a pretty neat and tidy person. I have a place for everything, I have my lists; I’m pretty organized.
I plan all my meals for the week, and am right now, in all of my spare time-
cleaning out our attic. After that I am going to re-organize all of the closets.
I do lots of laundry and change sheets all the time. And I like it this way. I’m a no-clutter mom and I like things clean.
Don’t get me wrong, almost every room in our house has toys is it, but there are also baskets, sized appropriately (and in colors to complement the room), to keep all the toys, for that particular room in.
No, I’m not anal.
But, I like things to be straight, no clutter (oh, I mentioned that already).
So, with that said, I took a big blow this week…
I tucked my 4-year-old in bed, kissed his little cheek and said good night. I closed his door, heard him take a deep breath and sigh and expected him to go right to sleep.
Ahh, nothing like a nice routine. But then, after a few minutes, I heard him calling for me. It wasn’t a distressed call; I figured that he was stalling and had to ‘tell me something he had forgotten during the day’. I went back upstairs.
“Mommy, something smells.”
I chuckled to myself and sniffed the air in his bedroom.
“I don’t smell anything, sweetheart.”
“No Mommy, over here.”
I walked over to his bed and still couldn’t smell anything.
“No, Mommy, down here, by me.”
I leaned down to his bed and his head and I did smell something… that bad, stale, sweat smell… yuck.
“I think it’s my pillow.”
I picked up his little round pillow decorated with animals that he loves, and insists on sleeping on EVERY night (because my mom gave it to him), even though we have tried offering much more comfortable pillows routinely.
It was the pillow.
“Whew!” he said.
“This does smell bad,” I confessed. “I’ll put this in the wash.”
“But I HAVE to sleep with that pillow!”
Then he sniffed it again, crinkled his nose and with no further words, thrust it upward to me, and asked me to put it in the wash right away, while taking the other pillow I offered him without a second thought.
I walked downstairs, my bruised ego in hand, and said to my husband,
“This pillow stinks!” Holding my chest, I continued, “our kid has the smelly pillow.”
I felt like Adam Sandler in Big Daddy (“You mean, I have the smelly kid?”). I love that movie. But I don’t like comparing myself to the lead character- a single, hapless, trying-the-best-he-can but NOT KNOWING WHAT HE IS DOING brand new dad. I make lists, for gosh sakes! I even ironed my son’s shorts for the first day of school!
How did this happen? How did I get to the point where my son cannot sleep because of the foul odor coming from the little pillow upon which he rests his head? He had to ask me to wash it! I can provide for him a clean pillow and I didn’t; and this is pretty basic. The shame…
“I am not Adam Sandler, I am not Adam Sandler.”
Okay, I’m over it.

THE LAST DAY OF SUMMER VICTORY
I intended for this to be our BIG POOL SUMMER. I thought my son would be ready to swim on his own and we would actually be able to play, play, play at our neighborhood pool.
Not the baby pool, THE POOL.
Well, intentions are just that. Sometimes they don’t happen.
Sometimes I intend on reading all evening with a good book, sometimes I intend to make a lavish meal during the week- these things don’t always happen either.
During the winter we hit a possible crimp in my BIG POOL PLANS…
My son got tubes in his ears. So what did I do? I had him fitted for custom made earplugs AND got puddy-like earplugs in case he liked those better, and thought we were set.
The only problem was that my 4-year-old son couldn’t stand earplugs in his ears. And I wasn’t surprised. He takes a long time to adjust to something new, as well as being a little stubborn (um… just like his mom).
To make a long story short, we spent the whole summer going back and forth about the earplugs; to my chagrin, I gave in and just held him in the big pool while he tried to swim, keeping his head above water , while crossing my fingers and praying that no water would get into his inner ear canal.
Fast forward to the beach, the second to last week of summer: To go in the waves he absolutely needed earplugs. We sat on the beach, I was thinking good thoughts (please , please). He loves the ocean, he saw it in front of him, he reminded me of a race horse wanting to run as fast as he could into the surf…
“You have to wear your earplugs, I’ve got them right here.”
“Okay.” He replied, as he sat down, criss-cross applesauce and patiently waited for me to put in his earplugs.
DONE.
Are you kidding me? It was that easy?? Then he ‘decided’ that he loves his earplugs…
And finally, on Labor Day, at the pool, he wore his safety vest, his earplugs and swam (for a few feet),
IN THE BIG POOL.
That was our last day of summer vacation.
UGH! I’m filing this away for future debates/compromises/deals/motivations/bribes .
Well, we’re definitely ready for next summer.
DON’T YA JUST HATE IT WHEN…
Don’t ya just hate it when… you are driving around (without KIDS),
doing errands or shopping,
just having time by yourself,
and all of a sudden you realize that you’ve been listening to the Laurie Berkner Kids CD– THE WHOLE TIME!
And you realized it because you’ve been singing or humming along with it.
GOOD STUFF, BUT I KNOW I’LL MISS MY ‘LUNCH DATE’
Even though it is a rainy Friday afternoon, I’m excited.
We’ve had a great and busy summer and school starts on Tuesday.
I’ve been savoring every lunch with my son this week
because this has been the last week that I will be able to eat lunch with him… he goes to preschool EVERY day this fall for the first time, not just Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
I’m going to miss my ‘lunch date’,
but I’m happy he’s growing up to be a little man and that he is excited for school.
I’m also happy that the start of school means that Autumn is not far away;
Autumn is my FAVORITE SEASON!
My opinion (of course, it’s my blog): Autumn is the most beautiful season and has the best smells…
and the best holidays!
