snowcapolis DC 2010

Well, we all made it through… the DC Snowpocalypse of 2010…

We even made it on Wikipedia!!!!!
Luckily, temperatures are warming, snow is melting, and only rain is on its way lovely, hmm.
I’m sure we’ve all learned something in the last couple of weeks…
As for me?  I’ve learned a lot.
How to end poverty?  No.
A Cure For Cancer?  No.
I’m talkin’ vital stuff here… like what to keep in your home AT ALL TIMES…
The first is pretty obvious:   WINE.

sledding

Well, the impossible has happened.
Pigs must be flying,
And Hell must be frozen over…
because-
my son is able to SLED down this HUGE mound of snow in our flat front yard,
thanks to the BULLDOZERS, yes, BULLDOZERS that plowed our street and covered every front yard with literally, walls of snow.
Everybody’s yard, lawn and landscaping is shot…
But that is another post, for another day…

The kids on our street are happy !

I’m Reminded of Just How Incredibly CHEESE-TASTIC The 80’s Were

February 16, 2010 by · 1 Comment

St. Elmo's Fire While my son played with Letter People, I accidentally turned on the ‘Sounds of the Seasons’ channel on our TV; I usually turn on ‘Light Classical’ during the day. Valentine’s Day/Romantic songs were playing on this channel- okay, appropriate, I thought, although Valentine’s Day was pretty much a non-event this year with over 3 feet of snow on the ground.

With ‘romantic music’ playing low in the background, while I straightened up the kitchen and my son played in our computer room/playroom/pretend-classroom I noticed something:

EVERY song I heard was from the ’80’s…

and I was taken back… and realized that the ’80’s were… CHEESE-TASTIC !

LIONEL RICHIE had a GREAT decade, in terms of commercial success,

so did Linda Ronstadt, (I heard lots of their songs :)

and do you remember… GLORIA LORING?! She was on ‘Days of Our Lives’ and sang, ‘Friends and Lovers’… she also sang the theme song to ‘Facts of Life’ and was married to Alan Thicke… who knew?!

Do you remember the band, Sheriff ?? They sang the ‘power ballad’- ‘When I’m With You’…

The ’80’s were great… And I’m so GLAD they are over.

Ugh- did you hear though that Shoulder Pads are back??!!

That’s 1 trend I’m not doing again,

Just remember,

Don’t Let Your Child Stack Magnets on Your Laptop…

Computer I’m back online, ahhhhhhh.

Something I learned during the snowstorm:  Tell your children that it is a rule not to put magnets on your laptop.

Yep, my son put these TINY magnets on my MacBook and POOF!  It Broke.

Long Story Short:  The employees at the Apple Store are fantastic and gave me instructions on how to install a new hard drive and recover my files from my old hard drive- I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t do any of this- my husband did.

FYI- Apple will install a new hard drive for you for $210.  This is not a crazy price, but you can easily buy a very good hard drive for under a $100 and install it yourself.  The hard part was ‘recovering’ my old files from my broken hard drive.  APPLE WILL NOT DO THIS.  And I understand why now:  We recovered MOST of my files, but not all of them.  Apple basically doesn’t want the headache of customers saying, “But 3 out of the 350 files didn’t come through.”  They don’t want to be in that game.  And they don’t have to be.  I don’t blame them.  And like I said, they will tell YOU how to do it… And just one more thing: make an appointment online or call beforehand- then you don’t have to wait!

And just to reiterate:

No Magnets on Laptops!

Make it a Rule in Your House-

Stop Saying North Dakota Gets This All The Time!

Washington DC Area.

Here we are in our 2nd blizzard WITHIN a week.

I have lived here all my life and cannot remember EVER getting this much snow.

We have survived a power outage, and my laptop hard drive breaking (FYI- don’t let your children put magnets on your laptop… yes, I’m serious).

I’m content with the exception of 1 thing-

I wish commentators and reporters on TV would stop saying things like,

“Ya know, people in say, ‘North Dakota’ get this all the time.”

MY RESPONSE:

“Yes, I know they get a lot of snow.  But we usually don’t.  And people in North Dakota have the right tools for snow removal and survival.  Even in Cleveland they have whole departments set up for snow removal, we don’t.  Everyone has a 4-wheel drive in North Dakota, I think it may be a state law even.  Not everyone here has a 4-wheel drive…like us for instance.”
